In medical terms, diabetes mellitus is also referred to a group of metabolic diseases which is characterized by the high blood sugar levels which results from the defects in insulin action or secretion or both. The disease was first identified as a sweet urine disease and excessive muscle loss. That's because the high level of the blood glucose or hyperglycemia is seen to lead to the spillage of the glucose into urine and hence termed sweet urine.

Additionally, diabetes mellitus as a group of metabolic diseases has also been reported to have been caused by complex interaction of environmental, immunological, life style and genetic factors. These diseases even feature the chronic hyperglycemia which is associated with macrovascular and microvascular changes that result in organ dysfunction, damage or failure.

Diabetes Mellitus is usually confirmed when a person has fasting plasma glucose of 126 mg per dl or higher. The occurrence of diabetes mellitus is essentially the same for both females and males and as said it increases with the age. According to medical reports, the prevalence of the known cases usually rise from about 6 percent in people aged 45 to 65 years to approximately 12 percent in those age between 65 or older.
