Although, these days a lot of couples come into the jewelry store together to pick out the piece, some men prefer to go the traditional way of buying the ring themselves and hoping that she will say yes, when it comes to asking for her hand in marriage, This approach,however, creates some questions for the future groom:

1. What type of gemstone should be put in the center?

2. How big should the stone be?

3. What style of diamond solitaire ring would she like?

4. What shape fits the setting and the future bride to be?

None of the above questions require a rocket scientist to answer, yet these same questions are responsible for making the purchase of diamond engagement rings the most traumatic shopping experience any men could have.

I will give you some guidelines, that should make your decision making process an easier one.

1.Traditionally, diamonds are the first choice of stone. Unless your future spouse has a different color preference. There are blue and yellow diamonds available on the market, but you would be taking a chance without her prior approval.

Alternatively (but again you should discuss this with her beforehand), you could opt to go with a moissanite, cubic zirconia or some other gemstone, like sapphire or emerald. Stones that you should avoid, are the softer stones. Tanzanite would be a good example, since it too soft to be worn on a daily basis.

2.Frankly, as big as you can afford.

3.Look at the jewelry she already owns. This will tell you, whether she likes big and wide bands, or something a little more subtle.

4.Same as #3. A petite women with slim fingers should not be wearing a huge band. Proportions are key here.
