Differences Between Fragrance Oils And Essential Oils

Both fragrance oils and essential oils are used to varying degrees to freshen the air

. Essential oils have been used for this purpose for many hundreds of years but in recent years designer fragrances have become more popular.

There are several important advantages of using these fragrances which all have to do with smell. First of all these fragrances can be manipulated or tweaked to make them more desirable. First of all they can be strengthened to give them more fragrance. They can also be altered to give them a more desirable effect. For example you can take the natural fragrance of plum and tweak it to make it plum fantasy. Vanilla becomes vanilla fantasy and strawberry can become strawberry fields.

The question that remains is; what is the difference between fragrance oils and essential oils, and what does it matter whether you use them for air freshening of candle making?

The answer is this; you can use either of these oils for fragrance but when you want to get health benefits you need to use essential oils. Essential oils contain many ingredients that the human body needs to heal and regenerate itself when injured or when faced with a deficiency of some kind.

If you want to use the oil for its fragrance benefits only I strongly recommend that you go with synthetic scented fragrance oils.

If youre a candle maker or soap maker who uses them to make candles and makes soaps that just smell good (to you and others,) regardless of whether its natural or not, then theres probably not much difference at all but I would say go with the synthetic oil. Just make sure that the oil that you use are quality oils that are undiluted. The only way that you can make sure that you get good oil is to be sure to deal with a reputable dealer.

Synthetic fragrance oils are produced by mixing various chemical components, some natural (from plants or even animals), and some synthetic. They are carefully formulated and/or blended to the exact specifications of a perfumer whose goal is to design a scent.

The perfumer is an artist who is trained in depth on the concepts of fragrance aesthetics and who is capable of conveying abstract concepts and moods with their fragrance compositions. Sometimes these fragrances are formulated to smell like something occurring in nature (e.g. lavender, pine, bluebonnets, strawberries), or they can be formulated to smell like an entirely new creation or concept (e.g. spring rain, love spell, winter wonderland.) The perfumer is an artist and as far as Im concerned perfume making is an art. I liken it to the composer of music or the director of a symphony or movie.

There are literally thousands of various compounds that each have their own scent which can be blended together create a fragrance oil. Some fragrance oils contain essential oils as part of the natural components or constituents. Some do not. Some contain synthetically made constituents of essential oils.

Whether the constituents of the fragrance oil are safe on your skin will determine whether or not the resulting scented oil is safe enough to be used on the skin. Fragrance oils, and especially the constituents that make up fragrance oils, are guided by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) which generates, evaluates and distributes scientific data on the safety assessment of fragrance raw materials found in perfumes, cosmetics, shampoos, creams, detergents, air fresheners, candles and other personal and household products. Perfumers and fragrance oil blenders are also guided by IFRA, the International Fragrance Association, which is the official representative body of the fragrance industry worldwide. Its main purpose is to ensure the safety of fragrance materials through a dedicated science program. They focus on fragrance safety both as it relates to the consumer and to the environment.
