Differences Between Web And Print Typography

Even though the entire concept of branding your company

, beyond the reputation thereof, is to try and incorporate all aspects of your brand into a recognizable entity that consumers can easily identify, thereby promoting your business and generating greater revenues. But, that being said, there are some key differences between we and print typography that should be taken into careful consideration before you make any final decisions. After all, there is a basic difference between the way words are viewed onscreen and the way theyre viewed on printed materials, so its important to keep those differences in mind when youre trying to build an effective, attractive print and web design.

From Print to Web Design

The simple fact is that reading a truly clear font on paper may lose its clarity when it transitions from print to web; what was once entirely readable when printed may become a total blur onscreen. So the odds are likely that, with the exception of words in your graphics, youll need to use a different font in your web typography than that in your printed materials.

Other factors may need to change when youre working with both print and web design. For instance, one major aspect of typography that enhances the readability of your text is the use of leading, or spacing between lines of text. A general rule of thumb in print is to lead with a space that is approximately twenty percent larger than the point size of your text; whereas in web typography, that leading may need to be increased to approximately fifty percent larger to ensure the ease of reading for your viewers. This is because computer screens, despite backlighting and the increasing clarity of screen resolution, are still more difficult to read on.

Another key facet of typography is the alignment of your text; although justifying your text may look neater in terms of aesthetics, onscreen the irregularities in spacing between words may make for jerky reading. In print, however, that potential is lessened; so while you never want to justify your web typography, doing so in print, where you often face space restrictions, is more acceptable.

One of the most common rules of print typography is using sans-serif fonts for your headings, as theyre bold and strong, but taking advantage of the curves in serif fonts in the body of your text to gently lead the readers eye from one letter to the next in a smooth fashion. When making the transition from print to web typography, however, the rules are completely the opposite. Rather, it is ideal that you should use serif fonts for headings and titles, as they are eye-catching and interesting, but because of their slight embellishments can make reading the smaller text of the body more difficult, so using sans-serif fonts in your body makes your typography more easily legible.

Differences between Web and Print Typography

Because of the various differences between web and print typography, youll need to account for the readability of both mediums in order to ensure youre making use of the most effective fonts and techniques in your print and web designs. While some aspects of typography, like creating an hierarchy and graduating in font size for ease of reading, most of the rules for one medium do not apply to the other. Just make sure that you know the rules of both mediums for typography, and you should be able to transition from one to the other as smoothly as possible.
