Different Alloys used in the Aircraft Industry

An alloy is a partial or complete solid solution made up by a combination of two or more elemental metals. This metal mixture has greater strength and flexibility than their component metals. The ratio of each component determines the properties of an alloy. Modern alloys may be created by adding just a few percent of another metal. There are a large number of possible combinations among the alloys, each having its own specific property. Steel, for example, is an incredibly diverse range of alloys.

Alloys are used in a number of objects depending on the elements involved in its making. Alloy materials have made significant contributions to present-day society, as the modern form alloys have a number of characteristics that were not there before. They are used in an extensive range of aircrafts, military, commercial, industrial, medical, residential and manufacturing applications. Alloys like Aluminium, Copper, Nickel, Stainless steel, Titanium all have different uses in various applications.

The UK aircraft industry has been using different types of alloy steels enabling aerospace designers and engineers to meet the demands for longer service and lower life cycle costs of the aircrafts. Alloys for airframe components and spacecrafts, mostly consists of Aluminium, which is the most common metal on earth. Aluminium alloys provide airplane manufacturers with strong materials to form a lightweight shell for aircraft.

High-strength aluminium alloys for aircrafts are used by aircraft manufacturers in the UK, to strengthen its structures. Alloy 7075 has zinc and copper added for ultimate strength and results in the finest aircraft finish. Duralumin was the first high-strength aluminum alloy which was employed initially for the framework of rigid airships. It is made up of Aluminum, Manganese and Copper. Alclad is also a new corrosion resistant aluminum product which is markedly superior to the present strong alloys. Alclad sheet and plate are preferred for aircraft wing skins to obtain good corrosion resistance.

BHP Billiton, Langley Alloys, High Conductivity Alloys Ltd, Advance Alloy Services Ltd and Perfection Alloys are among the UK well known businesses providing diverse range of alloy products and equipments for various manufacturing industries across Europe and at international level. SearchMe4 is a local information and online business directory that provides contact details of the UK alloys.
