Different Grass Seeding Processes

When large areas of bare land need quick grass coverage there are several options available

. These options include traditional seeding, laying sod, hydroseeding, and hydromulching. Traditional seeding is simply the process of spreading dry seed over an area of land. This can be done by hand or with a handheld seed spreader. This is sufficient for small areas, but results take time and can be patchy. Pieces of sod are large squares of actual grass. Areas of land can be covered with these squares which will eventually take root for permanent coverage. The problem with sod is the price. It is expensive to buy and expensive to lay.

The next option is hydroseeding. Hydroseeding is the process of applying a mixture of seed, water and fertilizer to an area of land. Small amounts of fiber mulch may or may not be included in the mixture. The mixture is called slurry. A hydroseeder is used to apply the slurry over the land. It sprays out, giving quick coverage of large areas of land. The slurry has a better chance of germinating faster because of the added fertilizer and mulch, if included. Hydroseeding is an affordable process with better results than traditional seeding.

Hydromulching is an improved process of hydroseeding. The slurry used in a hydromulcher has a large amount of mulch included. Once the slurry has been broadcast over an area of land, it normally will not move. The mulch and fertilizer keep the seed in place, provide the needed nutrients and the seeds germinate much faster. Faster germination leads to a faster growing time. The ending result from hydromulching is much better than traditional seeding and hydroseeding. It is also much more affordable than laying sod.

If you are looking for a way to get quick grass coverage over a large piece of land, especially a slanted slope, hydroseeding and hydromulching are the better choices. Take into consideration your landscaping budget and the land in question before you make your final decision. Make sure you purchase or rent only the best equipment for the process. Landscaping professionals can help you find the right equipment at the best price.
