Dermatologists may testify that skin does not absorb anything, but many choose to think differently. Even if products are not absorbed, the surface of the skin is plumped up and wrinkles appear to be diminished.

Some dermatologists say that all the money is wasted, since the skin is a barrier that the beauty creams cannot penetrate. Although there is evidence that some substances do soak into the skin, jojoba oil for one, the fact that most things do not should actually be a comfort. Skin products often contain harsh chemicals that may damage the very skin they claim to nourish and protect. However, sometimes substances used in combination balance the negative side effects and accentuate the positive, and laboratories and government agencies labor to keep commercial products safe.

Moisturizers work mainly by keeping water from being lost through skin rather than adding moisture from without. Personal preference and skin type will dictate whether a heavy cream or a lighter lotion will work best, while oils are great when added to a bath or smoothed onto wet skin afterward. All moisturizing agents seem to work best when applied to warm, damp skin.

Dermatologists sometimes say that rubbing all this stuff on your skin is a waste of time, but there is no denying that your skin feels and looks better with the right application of a cream or lotion. Even if all it does is seal in the skin's own moisture, a skin care product makes you feel better all over, and most of us think we look better, too.

Skin moisturizers are both big business and fun to use, and few will deny that their face looks better and their body feels better when skin is moist, supple, and soft.
