Different Means Of Transport From Coimbatore To Ooty
Established by the British as the summer residence of the then Madras government
back in the early 19th century due to its salubrious climate, Ooty is a popular hill stations in southern India. Ooty is situated in the mountain ranges of Nilgiris, in the state of Tamil Nadu.
Some of the tourist spots in Ooty are the Ooty Lake, Thread Garden, Botanical Gardens, Rose Gardens, Doddabetta Peak, St Stephens Church and the Tribal Research Center Museum.
The distance between Coimbatore to Ooty is about 84 km. It takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes to cover this distance by road. Take the Coimbatore-Ooty-Gundlepet highway (SH 181) that takes you through towns like Thudiyalur, Periyanaikanpalayam, Karamadai, Mettupalayam, and Coonoor, before reaching Ooty. From Mettupalayam the road passes through some beautiful hills and valleys.
State transport and private buses are available from Coimbatore to Ooty for this journey. The cost of a seat may vary from Rs. 80 for an ordinary bus and Rs. 200 for a deluxe bus.
One can also book a taxi from Coimbatore to Ooty that will cost about Rs. 2500 and the double for a round trip. This is a better option if you are travelling with a lot of luggage and family.
One can also take the risk of driving your own car if you like hill driving. There are viewpoints all along the way so that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery around.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway starts from the town of Mettupalayam, the nearest broad gauge railway station to reach Ooty from Coimbatore, and thus begins the journey full of turns and twists as this train ascends the 46 km, on its way to the hill resort of Ooty.
At a maximum speed of 33 km per hour, this toy train chugs from the plains climbing up through the spice and tea plantations and forest clad hills. The 16 tunnels and tall girder bridges on the way, along with the breathtaking view, makes this toy train to Ooty, something not to be missed. The train journey takes four hours and 30 minutes to reach its destination. There are nine stations in between them. The train is hauled uphill by steam engines, designed and built by Swiss Locomotive Works and imported in late nineteenth century. From Coimbatore frequent bus services and trains are available to Mettupalayam.
Remember to book tickets well in advance from the IRCTC web portal or from any railway reservation counter. The best option if travelling with children, do not forget to choose a seat on the left, because the valleys will fall on the left side while travelling up.
From Mettupalayam, the travelers can hire taxi or board a bus to reach Ooty.
