Many people today suffer from obesity
Many people today suffer from obesity. In fact, statistics show that there are 40 million people who are overweight in the United States alone. It is also alarming that there are 3 million morbidly obese human beings. Studies show that the obesity rates in the United States of America has reached epidemic proportions. This is the exact reason more and more people are opting for a healthier lifestyle.
Modern medicine has also developed ways to help individuals suffering from obesity. One of these methods is stomach reduction surgery. Although stomach reduction surgery is the most common weight loss surgery today it cannot be acquired just by anyone.
There are factors to be considered for an individual's eligibility for the operation. First, the person must have a body mass index of 40 and up. This BMI is considered extremely obese. This surgery may also be performed on people with a 35 to 39.9 BMI with serious health problems caused by their weight such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Also, individuals that are not able to maintain weight even with proper diet and exercise are also eligible.
If a person qualifies for the stomach reduction surgery based on the factors stated, a group of health experts would further analyze the candidate's health history and condition. The group is usually made up of a doctor, a surgeon, psychologist and a dietitian. Different aspects of the person's health such as diet history, weight history, medical condition and psychological status are evaluated. This is done to make sure that the stomach reduction surgery will be carried out as smoothly as possible.
The medical professionals will also look into the person's age and self-dedication. No specific age is set as a limit for stomach reduction surgery but the risks increase for people over the age of 65. A significant amount of dedication is required from the patient as there will be changes in diet will be made after the surgery.
In the United States, there are four types of stomach reduction surgeries: the AGB, RYGB, BPD-DS and the VSG. The Adjustable Gastric Band (AGB) is a type of stomach reduction surgery where a band is placed on the upper part of the stomach to reduce its size.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) is when a smaller stomach is made similar to the AGB method. The major stomach is bypassed and food is directly routed to the small intestine. Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) includes removing a large part of the stomach.
Food and digestive juice are both rerouted to prevent absorption. The fourth type is Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG). This procedure is done by creating a vertical sleeve that stays connected with the small intestine, often performed alongside BPD-DS to prevent absorption complications.
