Gemstones have been long cherished by people of different ages
. A gemstone is an organic material, rock or mineral which- after being cut and polished- is used to make jewelries, adornments in jewelries and for some other ornamental purposes. Theyre also known as crystalline rock and appear to be like a piece of attractive mineral. But aside from being an element in jewelry making, many people attribute supernatural powers to these precious stones. These organic materials are believed to have the ability to heal physical ailments, gain emotional health and could even bring spiritual power. For having been created out of endurance over the extraordinary force of nature, theyre thought of being very powerful that when people wear them, they can be near that power. Generally, gemstones are worn to ward off evil, to shield from negative energy and to keep people happy and healthy.
In many cultures, gemstones are also known as birth stones or lucky stones. Throughout history, people associated gemstones with particular months of the calendar. For this reason, many have adopted the belief that when they wear the gemstone that is correlated to their birth month, it could bring meaning in their lives. In the modern western world, birth stones are highly regarded as symbolic and meaningful.
Today, there are more or less 30 popular varieties of gemstones while the number of rare collector gemstones is uncertain. Some varieties appear to be existing and treasured since pre-historic times while some varieties have just been discovered recently. So how are these tones classified? There are five characteristics where classification of gemstones is based: Crystal Structure, Optical Characteristics, Chemical Composition, Specific Gravity, and Durability. But they are categorized into only four: the Precious, Secondary Precious, Semi Precious and the Opaque. We will focus much on the precious stones as these stones are widely popular today.
PRECIOUS
Under this category are the gemstones representing the nine planets. They are popular and well known stones referred to as the navaratna, a Sankrit term for nine gems. Diamond tops the list in this category while the other eight are Emerald, Ruby, Yellow Sapphire, Blue Sapphire, Red Coral, Gomedh, Cats Eye and Pearl. Pearl, however, are sometimes considered to be under the Secondary Precious category of gems. Below are some meaning and symbology of these nine gems with focus on the four most popular precious stones: Diamond, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire.
Diamonds - Diamonds are considered as the most popular, most expensive and the most
durable gemstones in our century. It is the gemstone of the planet Venus and the stone associated with Taurus and Libra. It symbolizes abundance and could help people to accumulate wealth. In some cultures, diamonds are thought of having the ability to overcome weaknesses and sorrows in life. When this stone is worn, the person wearing is believed to be capable in controlling temper or anger, wouldnt be affected by evil spirits, black magic and also, will have a happy family life.
Emerald - For thousands of years, emerald has been considered sacred, prized, most famous and favored green gemstone. It is the green gemstone variety of the mineral beryl. Emerald is the gemstone of the Planet Mercury and the stone associated with Gemini and Virgo. It symbolizes mental discernment, the ability to figure out the correct or right choice. It is also believed to bring success and harmony in married life. In some cultures, many people trust this stones ability to increase concentration or focus and control of wealtg. Thus, many students wear this and also people who cant really hold of wealth.
Ruby - If emerald is the most popular among the green gemstones, ruby is its counterpart in red gemstones. It is considered as the most valuable member of the corundum family. It is known for its hardness, durability, luster and rarity. It symbolizes fire for it is the gemstone for the mother of all planets, as they say the sun. This stone is believed to give solidity or firmness and removes fear. Thus, this gemstone is perfect for sales personnel as it could help boost the self-esteem or self-confidence of the person wearing.
Sapphire - Sapphire and Ruby are identical in all properties except for color. It is also considered as one of the most valuable member of the corundum family. It is known as the stone of prosperity. Wearers of Sapphires, most likely, acquire peace of mind and happiness. This precious stone is also popular in helping wearers achieve their aspirations in life. In ancient times, Royalties wear Sapphire to shield themselves against poison and harm. Yellow Sapphire is the gemstone of Jupiter and the stone associated with Sagittarius and Pisces. Blue Sapphire, on the other hand, is the gemstone of Saturn and the stone associated with Zodiac signs Capricorn and Aquarius.
SECONDARY PRECIOUS
These gems are also expensive and spectacular just like the precious, though theyre less expensive than the aforementioned stones. However, they seem to be the rarest. Under this category are Alexandrite, Demantoid, Garnet, Opal, Paraiba, Tourmaline and Tanzanite.
SEMI PRECIOUS
Amethyst, Andalusite, Aquamarine, Chrome Diopside, Citrine, Garnet, Heliodor, Indicolite (blue tourmaline), Iolite, Kunzite, Moldavite, Peridot, Rubelite (pink tourmaline), Spessartine, Topaz, Tsavorite are just some of the
precious gemstones included in this category.
OPAQUE
The last category is the opaque. Under this category are Amber, Aventurine, Carnelian, Jade, Jasper, Labradorite, Malachite, Moonstone, Onyx, Rose, Quartz, Sunstone, Turquoise. Opaque stones are solid and not transparent that no light can pass through it, unlike the previously stated gemstones. Nevertheless, theyre still valuable and important.
