Different Types Of International And California Wine

Most people have some ideas about the most common

, popular types of wine. They might also realize that the possibilities for variation and differentiation are virtually limitless, with most wines being produced in several different countries and regions, each producing its own version of the wine that changes in taste depending on even the year. So understanding what differentiates a specific California wine from its southern France, Australian, or Chilean counterpart can be difficult. But whether a person is buying wine for himself or to put together wine gift sets, grasping the fundamentals of these differences can make them much better and choosing the right wine.

There are a number of ways to break down the different types of wine. The first is by origin of the vitis or vine. Vitis vinifera comes from the Mediterranean region while vitis labrusca is from the eastern United States. Most of the few dozen especially popular types of wine are from the older, European family. The second, is by basic category, and there are five: White, red, ros, sparkling wine, dessert wine, and fortified wine. Most people know about red and white and can come up with Champagne, one specific type of sparkling wine, as a third if pressed. This is partly because these are the three most popular types, although rose has been gaining more attention recently for a number of reasons.

Each wine has a few specific characteristics that differentiate it from the others and help people identify when it is most appropriate to drink. For example, red and white are more common and have specific food pairings with which they are the best flavor compliments. Sparkling wine can be white, ros, or red, and is carbonated due to the production of carbonic gasses through secondary fermentation. Most common sparkling wine is white. Ros is made by one of three specific processes, either as a deviation of conventional red wine fermenting or through blending white and red. Dessert wine is made especially sweet through a number of different possible processes. And fortified wine is simple wine that has had spirits like brandy added to it.

After this basic breakdown, wines are divided by the type of the grape, sometimes specifically attached to their region. This is especially true of French and other European wines like Champagne, which comes from a specific region of France. On the other hand, California wine includes a number of different varieties from each of the five types and even various varietals of the same specific kind of wine descendent from different regions.

If you want to understand the nuances between types of wine, the specific details of the above categories are first level of information you need to learn. However, this level of understanding should just be the foundation of understanding wines. What you really need to know when choosing bottles deals with the differences between specific varieties of wine within one category. It's fairly easy to decide on white or red or sparkling. But knowing if you want some California wine like a specific Zinfandel or an Argentine Malbec or a French Cabernet Sauvignon requires a far more specific understanding of the minor differences in these wines. So understanding the basics is a good start.
