Different ways you can exercise your dog
The wild relatives of dogs would spend their time scavenging and hunting for food. Unfortunately, a great many modern dogs have very sedentary lifestyles. The fact that your dog has no outlet for any physical or mental frustrations can often lead to behavioural problems such as chewing furniture, barking and over-excitability.
By increasing the exercise that your dog gets, you can eliminate behavioural problems, keep your dog healthy and agile, keep their weight under control, build confidence and mean that they are more likely to sleep soundly in their dog bed at night rather than being restless.
Some people like to incorporate exercising their dogs with their own daily exercise routine. If you want to take your dog running, jogging or even running alongside your bike you should break them in gently. Dogs under 18 months should not run for sustained periods of time as their bones have not finished growing. In these cases and in those of older dogs, it is better to take for a nice long walk rather than a long jog.
Dog owners on average walk over 30% more than dog owners so this can be an enjoyable time for both you and your dog. Vary the route so that neither of you get bored and invest in a good collar and lead so that you are both comfortable. If your dog has joint problems or is obese and losing weight, they can benefit hugely from weight bearing exercise such as swimming- ideal if you live near a river or the coastline.
However, exercising your dog does not necessarily have to mean that you get out of breath too. Games such as frisby, ball throwing, fetch and even bubbles can keep your dog entertained and fit as they run around to catch them. Look out in your local pet supplies shop for a huge range of dog toys, balls and other play things. Of course a companion dog can often take your place in the entertainment and exercise stakes and will also ensure that your dog is never bored.
Finally as with humans as you increase the exercise, you may find that your dog becomes hungrier. It is important however that you do not increase their food too much especially if they have weight problems. Consult your vet as to the ideal type and weight of dog food so that they do not continue to be overweight.
