Maputo has been this countrys capital since 1898. Formerly known as Loureno Marques, it has developed into Mozambiques biggest city at the mouth of the Santo River.

A biographical essay about this artist notes that his exuberant, eclectic, complex and thoughtful buildings and projects have been published occasionally, but they were so far from the post-war US-led commercial multinational styles in architecture that they have not been sufficiently recognised for their quality and originality.
