Traditional Chinese poetry is divided into poetry and prose. It may seem complex for the modern generation since the techniques that are used may not be known easily. In this article, we shall throw light on the techniques and structure used in classic Chinese poems. Poetry is of different types like lyrical, narrative and dramatic. The techniques used for writing include free verse, pentameter, rhyme and versification. In ancient China, versification was used for writing poems.
The versification principle uses metrical practice in poetry. Metrical practice refers to the use of meter in a poem. Poetic meter may be different according to the origins of a poem. Sometimes, the meter depends on the stress created on a word while at other times it may focus on the number of syllables used in the poem. A poetic form may be achieved in different ways. Skillful poets will structure their meter and line length and also deviate from the same to create an effect in the mind of the readers.
Traditional Chinese poetry has different structures and forms. There are several genres in a poem like narrative poetry, epic poetry, dramatic poetry, satirical, elegy, verse fable and prose poetry. Poetic structure and form may be used interchangeably as they are more or less the same.
