One mistake that I see many affiliates make is that they focus on marketing--which
is a very good thing--but don't spend as much time as they should when actually selecting the programs to promote. Look, if you are careful about the affiliate program you promote, you will make much more money with a good one--and with the same amount of effort expended--than you'll make with a mediocre one.
It's the 'whole work smarter not harder' adage you always hear about. The simple reality is that some programs for affiliates offer more leverage than others, provide higher pay outs, offer a greater percentage commission payout, and similar things that all mean potentially big income for you. Let's talk about some of these so you really understand my points.
Build An Asset: Lifetime Income Program for Affiliates
Most affiliates don't really get this principle: the one of thinking about the program you promote as a potential asset, that is. On the contrary, the vast majority of affiliates scurry from one sale to the next. When they make a sale, they get a rush. It's like a drug. The next sale is a quick fix. But they're no better than commissioned sales people. There are some programs that will pay affiliates for the lifetime of the customer. This means the more customers you build up, the more of an asset you build because you work once, but get paid potentially forever. Some of these programs will even allow you to sell out your position to someone else. Which proves you're creating a real asset.
Building A List
Most super affiliates will tell you that you should strongly consider building a list. And it's good advice. But did you know that some affiliate programs will actually build the list for you? Allowing you to both create an asset and leverage off their work simultaneously. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it isn't. One company I promote in the health industry runs a popular newsletter and anytime someone signs up to the newsletter through me, that subscriber is tagged to me forever. When and if they ever convert to becoming a customer, I get full credit on the sale and all future sales. So do all the students I teach who also promote this company. Amazing. It's building a list without having to build a list!
High Sale Price
If the item you are selling it a higher ticket one, you generally stand to make much more per sale than low ticket items. This is just common sense. Yet it amazes me how many affiliates are promoting cheap little ebooks selling for $29 bucks and are willing to take a one time sale of 50% of that.'
High Percentage of Commission Sharing
I've never looked at the percentage a program for affiliates pays you as something that's very important because in and of itself it doesn't tell you much. But when you have other data, it does begin to tell you something valuable. If an affiliate program offers you 20%, what does that tell you? Not much. After all, if the average sale is $10 dollars, 20% of $10 dollars isn't much money. But if you know the average sale amount--let's say it's $100 dollars--now 20% tells you something. It tells you that you can make on average $20 dollars per sale, which isn't too shabby, especially if it's from a lifetime income program.
I consider the programs for affiliates such a vital component of success that in my own training program, I set it up by selecting pre-approved winning affiliate programs in it that I've personally tested. My training program is probably the only one online that "limits" the students to certain programs, and doesn't allow students to choose their own programs and niches. Granted, it makes it more restrictive than most affiliate training services, but it also eliminates one of the primary reasons people fail to make a good income online as well.
In conclusion, please spend more time considering the actual programs you promote in more detail if you expect to make a significant income with your affiliate marketing business.
