Disk Imaging

A disk image is a single storage file that consists of entire piece by piece of information from a principal storage device

. Disk image can be made from the hard drive, CD Rom or a flash drive. It is primarily used to make a backup of the entire primary storage device. In case of a data loss, disk imaging software is used or retrieves the data.

Besides offering system recovery, disk imaging has been employed for a number of other reasons. Some companies have used a disk image for providing software updates and service packs. Companies like Apple and Microsoft have used a single disk image that contains most of the updates or architectural files for their software programs. Apart from that disk imaging has also been used for bulk software installation. In large companies and schools where most of the computers use similar operating software programs, disk imaging can come in handy by saving time and money. A single disk image file can be used to install operating system software on many computers.

Many of the disk imaging takes place by installing disk imaging programs. These software programs use the data on the hard drive and transform that into a single disk image file. This disk image file can then be transferred on a CD or another storage medium. There are many methods of disk imaging. The first one is known as forensic imaging, in which the entire contents of the primary drive are copied to an imaging file by using forensic imaging software. An additional method that is related to forensic imaging is disk cloning. The disk cloning process is pretty simple during which the entire data of the primary disk is copied to another drive, typically it during this method, files and its arrangement is copied.

A more secure disk imaging process called data recovery imaging is also used. This method is similar to forensic imaging as it copies the complete sectors of the hard drive. But along with that, unlike forensic, it can also copy data that is corrupted or incomplete. Moreover, some data recovery imaging software programs are also able to resolve disk errors by either deleting the damaged file or dividing the file, so that corrupted part is not copied with the file.

Disk imaging is also done from CD ROMs but because CD ROMs are secondary medium of storage, it is not used for storing important data. Some of the most common CD ROM disk imaging formats are iso, cdi and mds Disk imaging programs are readily accessible these days with Roxio, Magic Iso and Nero are very popular. Both Apple and Windows have also produced their own disk imaging software programs.
