Disruptive Behavior in the Classroom - What Not to Do

Thus, as classroom managers and leaders, we tend to discipline students and give warnings. This in turn gives us that mere hope that the said individuals will not repeat the actions in the long run.

Oftentimes, teachers have that disparity as to what role they should take in terms of disciplining the students. Being as noisy as they are and even how stubborn they can be, some teachers will often overlook it to the point that it will be repeated again. Some teachers will instead call the students and reprimand them in a discipline they know best, and often end up being called by the principal and being reprimanded in return. As a teacher we sometimes don't know what to do. Thus, here are some things that you must not do given a disruptive behavior shown by one student - or a group of them.

1. Do not scold them in class. Students have feelings too. When they are being noisy, do not acknowledge their action in front of everyone else. This is a form of feeding them the thought that you have recognized them. In turn, they might be embarrassed by their fellow classmates and will end up doing the actions again and again. Students are often just testing their teachers' patience. If you feel the need to tell them that what they did was wrong, do it personally with the students involved, away from the eyes of their peers.

2. Do not let the disruptive behavior pass by. The first offense is always the most important one and the turning point of every disciplinary action. Thus if a student misbehaved in class for the first time, do not let it slip. Talk to her personally and pinpoint what she had done wrong. Do not allow a mistake to be left unnoticed. For if you do, the action will be repeated and the rest of the class atmosphere would be contaminated by it.

3. Do not run out of patience. This might be something very hard to do, but as a teacher, patience is always a virtue. As much as possible, contain yourself from all the anger and stress in disciplining a student or group of students. For one thing, when you lose such value, you become triggered with anger and rage. This in turn can lead to shouting and saying bad words to them. This can be used against you. Thus, you need to be extra careful. Keep a peaceful mind every single day and transition into something calm when a situation arises. Do not succumb to anger. Lengthening our patience needs time in order to perfect the procedure.

As a teacher your job does not simply begin and end with a simple everyday lecture. There is still depth and more to it than you can ever imagine. Thus, take this as a guide when something unexpected happens. This will also save you and your profession as well. Disruptive behavior in class need not be something difficult to handle but rather considered a challenge for any teacher to overcome.
