Dive In To The Heritage Of The Glasgow Pub

For centuries the very humble Glasgow pub has been an integral part of this great town

. In Glasgow the humble pub takes on a much more significant role than it does in other cities where its often viewed as jusy aplace to go and get drunk. Many of them have even become recognised landmarks in their own right and are as much a part of the heritage and architecture of Scotland's largest urban area as is its Cathedrals, art galleries and even, heaven forbid, its football stadiums. These simple settings have enticed folks from all avenues of life - from the shipbuilders of the Clyde shipyards to the notorious Glasgow tobacco lords who, for quit some time, were a lot of the richest and most influential businessmen on this planet. Many of these pubs, such as Sloans in the city centre have been trading for more than 300 years now. This makes them one of the oldest companies in the city.

Thats not to say that its all been a smooth ride for Glasgow pub owners though. Following World War 2, the city authorities set out on an intensive program of redevelopment to try to clear the city of its famous tenements and offer far better quality housing for its populace. A large part of this urban redevelopment included destroying the infamous tenements in areas such as the Gorbals and replacing these with contemporary high rise flats complete with such luxuries as inside toilets. At this time, however, the wave of fresh expansion also ate up many of the venerable old Glasgow drinking establishments, and sadly , many of them were lost once and for all in the name of progress. Places for example the New Era Bar in the Gorbals along with the splendidly named Mucky Duck in Govan were, regrettably lost and never replaced.

The Mucky Duck in Govan was just one of the numerous pubs that fell by the wayside, despite the fact that, to this day, residents still recall with great fondness the antics of these old drinking holes.Given that beer drinking is practically a national activity in some countries for example Germany or the Czech Republic, its amazing to find out that Glasgow has more pubs per head of population than either of these nations. The truth is, it was lately discovered that Glasgow has more pubs per head of population than any other city in Europe! Pubs continue to be sprinkled all around the city and even today you may still find concentrations of drinking establishments, for example the Gallowgate area which once boasted an unbelievable 86 pubs stretching out from Glasgow Cross to Parkhead - a distance of just over 2 miles. Worlds greatest pub crawl anyone?
