Diy Timber Flooring - Counting Down The Top Tips
When you install your timber flooring, you need to consider the two types of hardwood floors: 1/ Pre-finished 2/ Unfinished
. If you are looking for a fast install that is less labor intensive go for the pre-finished version. Further, the finish is already applied when you purchase the timber. For the full set of DIY instructions read on...
If you are prepared to put in the effort and spend time learning how to successfully install an unfinished hard wood floor, the end result is superior to the pre-finished version.
When it comes to installation, the quality of a pre-finished timber floor is gauged on the preparation and quality of the sub floor. Any uneven surface with respect to the sub floor will cause the finished installation to squeak and perform poorly. Usually, the sub floor can be prepared with plywood.
On completion of laying the sub floor, rosin paper should be used to separate both the timber floor and the sub floor. This measure will prevent friction and contact between the two surfaces. Without applying this step, your new flooring will not perform to its peak.
Nailing the boards is another crucial component. By using the 'secret nails' method you can avoid ugly nail holes which can spoil the finished product from a visual perspective. In order to prevent such from occurring, you can use a blind nailer which is a nail gun to carry out this part of the installation.
Although this may seem fairly insignificant, it's important to make sure the very first board is laid to perfection, as this sets the tone for the following boards. If there is even the slightest of error at the start, this error will grow as you progress. Ensure the boards are always square as you move across the floor.
Always allow extra material to allow for waste and human error. To be on the safe side order an additional 30% flooring to cover those unforeseen mistakes. Don't worry; even the professionals carry additional materials to save patching together the very end of the installation.
When it comes to applying the finish to an unfinished product, do yourself a favor and practice on some off cuts first. Although making a mistake with this process can be reversed, save yourself many hours of re-sanding the floor to fix your mistake. Good luck with your project!
