Do I Need A Certified Public Accountant?
People start businesses all the time
People start businesses all the time. They come up with wonderful ideas, innovative services, or revolutionary products that will undoubtedly be overnight successes only to find that the nitty-gritty of business is far more mundane and complicated than they had first imagined.
Some don't. Some come in fully expecting many of the potential pitfalls and problems associated with a business startup but still fail to succeed because they take on too much too soon.
Either way, one of the best things to do when trying to get your business off the ground is to eliminate the headaches and time consumption associated with the unavoidable financial side of business by hiring a certified public accountant. While it may seem counterintuitive to spend money in an area that you could arguably engage in yourself, it is money well spent if it allows you to pursue the areas of our business that you are passionate about. No matter where you are in the country, New York or San Antonio, an accountant is a vital investment.
CPAs are plentiful in today's marketplace, and in our present economy it can be very useful to shop around to find the right fit. So what do you look for when you search for the best CPA?
The obvious first requirement is that they be properly certified. CPAs must certify by state, so make sure that your potential CPA has the right credentials. After that, the next questions should involve the level of experience your CPA has. Being in the business a long time isn't necessarily the only thing to consider. Perhaps the individual has most of his or her professional experience in large corporate businesses or auditing. If you are running a small business, then you might want to look for someone who has worked with small businesses; perhaps even someone who has worked in your industry.
References are all important when seeking a CPA. Just as you would call a former employer before hiring a new employee, you'll want to check the CPA's former or current clients to make sure they are pleased with their performance. Once satisfied, you'll want to make sure that the CPA isn't already overburdened with clients. Sure, they may be super at what they do but how much time are they going to devote to your business? Will they promptly return a call? Will they pander to bigger clients to your detriment?
There are other things to consider, including how respected the individual is by the business community, whether they represent themselves as a professional, and whether they have any other expertise which might come into play during your day to day business dealings.
At the end of the day the most important aspect is trust. Do you feel as though you can trust the CPA? Many a firm has fallen to corrupt financial practices. You don't want to risk your business and reputation on someone you may not be able to trust even though they might look perfect on paper. Whether you are looking for a Seattle or San Antonio accountant, do your homework and then trust your gut.
