Do You Really Know How To Increase Your Motorcycle's Mpg Ratio?

The miles per gallon (MPG) rate that your motorcycle produces is something that you may or may not be overly familiar with

. However, chances are when you're asked you will boast that your motorcycle has a great MPG and you can get 40, 50 or even over 60 miles per gallon out of it.

In reality, if you are not aware of what affects your MPG, you'll be struggling to get 30 miles per gallon.

These 3 points are all great ways to increase your MPG, therefore reducing the amount of money you spend on fuel. Team this with shopping around for the cheapest motorcycle insurance premium and you can be looking to save several hundreds of pounds every year.

1. Accelerating. One of the easiest ways to lower your MPG is to accelerate too fast. Whether you're at a complete stop or are riding around a windy road, always try and accelerate slowly but smoothly. This doesn't mean that you should creep away from a traffic light or take 10 minutes to change from second to third gear, just that you should try and be as careful as you can when accelerating

2. Braking. Similarly to accelerating, braking is one of the easiest ways to reduce the MPG rate your motorcycle produces. Unless you're out for a leisurely ride, the freedom that a motorcycle gives you sometimes means that you can get carried away and as well as accelerating too quickly, you can also fall into the bad habit of braking too harshly.

Of course, there will no doubt be instances when braking harshly is a necessity, such as if someone pulls out in front of you. However, when riding generally and needing to slow down, you should aim to brake the same way that you should accelerate - slowly but smoothly.

The easiest way to change your braking habit is to look further ahead along the road than you normally would. If you see a traffic light approaching, ease off the accelerator a little or do the same if you're about to approach a bend. Chances are you won't need to brake at all in some instances if you think far enough ahead and can simply slow down to the necessary speed by easing off the accelerator.

3. Changing gears. The effects of bad gear changing are not as widely known as bad accelerating and braking, but it can have just as much of an effect on your MPG.

Each and every motorcycle will have an ideal number of revs to change gear at, which can vary from under 1,500 to over 7,500, dependant upon the size of the engine.

If you aren't sure whether you're changing gears at the optimum time, next time you're out on your motorcycle and you change gears, listen to the engine and take notice of how the motorcycle feels. After changing gear, does it feel like its struggling? If so, it means that you've changed gears too early and your MPG will suffer. Alternatively, just before changing gear, does the engine get louder and start to whine? If that's a yes, that means you're leaving it too late to change gears and it will be having just as bad of an effect on your MPG as changing too soon.
