, but can also be detrimental to production efficiency. The lure of a home office comes with a price and while quite manageable, you must consider the ups and downs and plan accordingly to make your working from home experience enjoyable.
The obvious benefits of working from home may include:
Savings of time and expense requisite to traveling to and from work each day.
Ability to work virtually in any part of the world making living in Austin and working in Seattle feasible.
Flexibility of having service personnel (lawn service, carpet cleaners, pest control, cable installers, etc.) in to perform their services without losing the time off from work.
Stress relief of not having to fight traffic, deal with road rage, etc.
Ability to work in your pajamas should you so desire.
Savings on daycare or senior care.
There are also some unforeseen disadvantages of working from home. Home can be a very distracting place. Pitfalls to watch out for include:
If your friends know you work from home, they may feel its ok to call or just stop by for a moment.
You may experience technical difficulties: VPN going out of service, construction crew cutting a phone/cable service line.
If children or non-independent seniors are in the home, they cause their own distractions that must be addressed in a timely manner and can interfere with your efficiency.
Instant messaging/texting can be a killer. Need a quick breather, take one, but act as though you are in the office. How would you act there?
Now that you are considering the pros and cons of a home office, you are probably considering what steps to take to ensure working from home allows you to remain a productive and effective worker. Tips for working effectively from home:
Define boundaries, a routine, specific workspace. (Where is your workspace? Who can interrupt when and why? When does the workday start and end? Do I eat at my desk throughout the day or take defined breaks and lunch? How do I handle personal calls and messages?)
Act professionally. (Keep a neat work area. Dressing professionally can put you in a better mindset to perform. Mental blocks are not a reason to put off work, stick to your schedule. Assign tasks to a specific day or time of day to ensure projects/assignments stay on schedule.
An efficient home office is not a daycare. If you need child or senior care, obtain it. Take advantage of assistance for shorter workdays. Defining a workday does not always mean it is an unbroken 8 hour day. Employers want to know you are performing contracted work. Attempting to work 8 hours straight while caring for another is not possible. Plan accordingly.
Working at home provides many benefits to your personal life and sanity. If you plan and act in an appropriate manner with the proper boundaries, it can be very fulfilling.
