Does High Tuition Equal High Quality?
Students from low-income families were often unable to receive a college education at all, and the prestige associated with an expensive school provided bragging rights for wealthy families. The logic may have been that a higher cost to students was associated with a school spending more money on resources like libraries, building and construction costs, or higher salaries to compensate more qualified instructors. Theodore Long, president at Elizabethtown College, recalls one retired college president telling him that in order to better the reputation of his school in the 1970's, he simply raised tuition.
But today, students do not attend college to prove that they can afford it, but rather, to receive an education that will lead to a successful career and economic prosperity later in life. In the past few years, economic recession has further proved the point that an education does not have to be expensive to be adequate. Just as businesses have been forced to adapt to a changing economic environment, schools must also adapt. Long said that "under the banners of affordability and accountability, colleges and universities nationwide are being challenged to deliver quality education for less and to demonstrate that students learn something of value for the tuition they pay."
More traditional methods of determining the quality of a school rely on evaluating "input" rather than "output," as Long claims, with input referring to a school's budget and output to the student outcome generated by a school. But, as our ways of thinking have evolved, we can no longer simply equate a school that charges high tuition with high performance. Instead, to more efficiently evaluate a school, we must look at other factors like completion rates and job attainment, which can actually assess student progress and success.
Long said that while many involved in higher education may be bitter that an "economic tsunami" is responsible for changing our nation's education standards and ideals, they still have a responsibility to educate our students and prepare them to succeed in a changing society. Creating 21st century teachers and learners will help to "serve the public's interest in rebalancing cost and quality."
