Wipe the water off and inspect the surface. If the stone surface turns darker, then that stone could definitely use some sealing. If the granite and marble showed little to no change, then you can forego sealing since the test shows the stone can handle stains and spills.

Another variation of the test is by using cooking oil instead of water. This is because not all stains encountered on the granite surface are water-based. If the oil doesn't get absorbed, then that stone is naturally sealed.

When do you do the test? You can do the test before and after buying the stone. Before the purchase, you can use the test to determine if the stone would need sealing. If you determined that the stone would need sealing and are fine it, you can then use the test to tell when the stone needs to be sealed next. Since sealing needs to be renewed over time, knowing the right time to redo it can help prevent late or premature sealing of your natural stone. You can also do the test at random times to test if the sealant is working as it should. You can also use the test to tell whether the sealer is doing its job and whether the professional who applied the sealer did a good job of it.
