Doorbells: Their Usage In The Modern Day

Doorbells are the first piece of hardware your guests notice when visiting your home. These tiny index finger-sized buttons placed by your front door do so much more than you think. The ringing sound is activated when it's pushed can alert to the presence of an expected friend, package delivery man, or even a religious messenger on a mission. What actions do you take when someone presses rings your bell? Historically, you'd just answer the door to a friendly vacuum salesman or neighbor who has baked you something delicious. Then, when eye holes came into existence, we began to peer through those as a first step to opening the door. And today, sometimes we don't even answer the door at all when our doorbells ring. Sometimes we hide from view, and this is what most people do when those roving religious folks stop by.

For me, and I don't think I'm alone here, dread strikes me, I sit up straight and often feel like I'm being completely intruded upon. Unless I've done a bit of online shopping, I know that no one should be ringing my bell. Even if I'm not doing anything particularly important at the time, I know I'm never going to feel like chatting about religion with people I don't even know. It is usually a sunny Sunday afternoon, prime time for these folks who are on a mission seem to be cruising around in suits with a message for me. I have fallen prey in times past. They've handed me their literature and I've politely thanked them before closing the door and tossing their little magazines into my recycling bin. Guilt of course sets in, but why? I didn't invite them over and I really doubt if they care about my afterlife experience. Do they consider doorbells to be buttons to our souls?

All my life I've tried to make a memorable first impression by installing high quality and artsy looking doorbells next to my door. I happen to pay close attention to detail so I've always thought they add a very interesting look to the front of homes. But in this age of technology, my friends have texted me that they're coming over, I've tracked my packages online, and my neighbors don't even look at me, much less bake for me. So, are doorbells a thing of the past since we don't want to be bothered? Well, for me, I'll keep it out there for the Girl Scouts to ring. I really love those mint cookies.
