Dos Plumas Hunting Ranch - Bow Hunting Tips: Know Your Animal's Anatomy

Sometimes when hog hunters get out in the woods

, they get so excited they forget something very important, especially when using a bow. And that"s shot placement.

Shot placement on hogs is crucial. I can"t explain enough how important it is to hit the elbow. And there again, know the anatomy of a hog. Know the anatomy of your animal. Not just pigs, but YOUR animal. Every animal.

I hear a lot about guys that have gone over to Africa to hunt and that every animal is different. So you need to know the anatomy of your animal before you ever go into the woods. Find out exactly where it hits.

I hear that the anatomy on the shot placement on a bear"s different. So I"m fixin" to go on a bear hunt in September. And we"ve already started studying the anatomy of a bear and where the shot placement needs to be. It just doesn"t do any good to go out there and shoot everything like a white tail because, you know, just not the case.

You know, God made them all different.

I read a real nice story on Bowsite about a friend of mine that"s hunted with us here at Dos Plumas. He went out and shot a coastal brown bear up in Alaska. He said the shot was 10 yards away when the bear walked up facing him. Now he could have drilled him right in the chest. But he waited for that shot angle, waited for the bear to turn, and he slipped it in far back because it was a hard angle away and it drove it up into the vitals. So he waited patiently.

It"s so crucial on an animal, especially a dangerous game animal. So knowing the anatomy of your animal is huge, especially in a situation like that. You need to take all these factors into account when you"re practicing and before you ever go and get into the woods.
