Few, if any, translating games from one console to a laptop as Madden football is on the PSP. For years, the NFL juggernaut did not feel gimped on Sony's handheld machine, and in fact it is uncannily close to the PS2 version at all important ways. What's more, this season's portable Madden actually released its PS2 cousin. For the first time we can remember, we would throw down on the small screen than on the large (360 and PS3 versions notwithstanding).

As it has been for years, on-field action is solid and well known. There is however one significant change that piqued our interest - Defensive camera is turned, forcing you to see and respond to action from an angle that feels strangely obvious (though you've played that way on the offensive for a few decades now) . It's an interesting twist, and even if not revolutionize the often incoherent job playing defense, it definitely livens things up. Other than that, Madden is a typical day at the office, for the uninitiated, it means solid controls, smooth action and deep possibilities.

Sorry, there are plenty of other familiarities we could have easily done without. Seeing the same recycled pre-and post-game animations for God knows how long now getting really annoying, while commentary from Al Michaels and John Madden seems like it has not been updated since the Cowboys' last playoff victory (not that we count but that goes back more than ten years).

Game Modes also remain as they were last year, including the mandatory Franchise mode, online games, and Madden moments. Again, it's a healthy recipe for a solid pigskin title, but there are no new types of games this season, and it's disappointing.Although we are not exactly the biggest fans of Superstar mode, it would make sense for a variant of the at least one appearance on a portable title.

Madden and PSP have come together beautifully for years now, and for better or worse this season is no different. It gets harder and harder to ask for any material changes to the Madden formula, we have a feeling that even if we did, we would be disappointed with the answer. As it is, will anyone with a penchant for the virtual gridiron likely feel at home again in 2009. As long as you're not looking for anything too different, it is probably a very good thing.
