Mobile hoops fans have been quite a smorgasbord of basketball this fall, when no fewer than three NBA titles have dribbled their way to the PSP. The gang at 2K Sports has decided to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their franchise by throwing their hat in the ring notebooks and the results are surprisingly good - considering it's their first go-round on the platform.

Unlike his counterparts The Inside and Live, 2K10 focuses squarely on team-based basketball, avoid mini-games and single player career development in favor of more traditional sports sim fare. Do not let this fool you, though, as there are still lots of good things to do. A deep franchise mode worthy of all consoles (called Association) to keep you occupied for weeks, or you can choose to ignore the petulant owners and multi-year plans by diving into a single season or just heading straight to the playoffs. Standalone tournaments, informal street games, and configurable situations is also on the bill.

We were quite impressed with the on-trial which 2K10 has the strongest pure basketball insight in the three games. Shooting and passing are intuitive, and the playcalling is a snap, making it easy to jump into and play. Bumping up problems from the standard Pro All-Star gives an almost perfect degree of competition, leading to plenty of back-and-forth game that comes down to the wire.

2K10 also differs from its competitors with an impressive array of old-school legendary players as eight teams, spanning the 1950s through the 1990s, supplementing your typical list of available squads. Our only gripe was that we were not able to place them in tournaments - we really wanted a Battle Royale featuring Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson and the rest of Hall of Famers at our fingertips.

To be sure, there are a handful of other issues that keep 2K10 from being an all-hours.Frame rate chug a bit over the standard five-on-five matches, which probably would not be as visible if replays and cutscenes do not run so smoothly. Other, smaller games (like 1-on-1 or 2-on-2) do not suffer from slowdown either. We have also noticed random half-or full-second hiccups when the ball should be near the edge, leading to moments of terror when we thought the game was about to go down. Heck, Oklahoma City Thunder himself suffer the indignity of being called the Sonics announcer Kevin Harlan. Oops - awkward!

Despite these errors, we keep returning to the fact that we just dig the fundamental basketball, played on the pitch. And yes, while 2K10 not have as many options as The Inside or NBA Live, it's still an interesting handheld hoops title that deserves a look.Depending on your perspective, it may fit the bill better than the rest.
