The original Prinny was something of an anomaly: a hardcore 2D action homage to the classic Ghouls n 'Ghosts series from a developer better known for paint-happy strategy game set in the weird and wacky world of one of those strategy games (Disgaea). Like its inspiration, was Prinny screamingly difficult - but certainly not unreasonable - and reactions were split between the game being a brilliant homage to bygone classics or a game so obsessed with imitating the heavy problems and imprecise control of the past that it was unenjoyable . Prinny 2 seems to fulfill the latter camp a bit more while still appealing to the past - and mostly succeeds.

As in the original game, you're put in control of the pole legs Prinny, a damned soul stuck in a fragile penguin-like body and sentenced to serve Demon Lord Etna. It seems some creep has made off with a pair of tighty-whities her, and if Prinnies not find the panty-snatching pervert could Etna's next set of lingerie just be from their hides. Once again, you get a massive army of Prinnies - 1,000, to be precise - and set off at different levels to try to track down the thief. Stages can be solved in any order, although they are becoming harder as more and more are cleared, changing things like the enemy and obstacle layout depending on the order they are played in.

And make no mistake about it: Prinny 2 is tough. These 1,000 life you get? You'll need at least a decent chunk of them to finish the core game. In fact it is especially easier than the original, but: The Prinnies have access to a new "Break" mode, which can be entered by using special combo attack repeatedly and collect bonus items scattered throughout levels. When Prinnies is in Break mode, their attacks are much stronger and they get access to new special skills to help them clear out enemies. There is also a new seriousness "Baby Mode, which allows Prinnies extra health, adds restorative elements to levels that puts some extra" security block "throughout the stages and ramps down the difficulty of bosses a little - though it mocks you a bit in the process,turning your health indicators in diapers and abandonment levels Prinny-baby pictures.

While severity is significantly friendlier this time, one of the key complaints about the original - the controls - is still a sticking point. While the controls are responsive and easy to learn, they are deliberately designed to match the old, classic platform game. In other words, you may be able to double-jump, but do not expect to be able to accurately modify your path when you press buttons. It will take some serious getting used to for both old and new platforming fans, and while some players will ultimately take it, others will probably find it frustrating.

The controls are easier to forgive, but when you realize that they are a loving tribute to the game developers at NIS no doubt loved in their formative gaming years. There is a large amount of affection for the genre that shines through in Prinny through cleverly devious scene and boss design, excellent done 2D sprite animation, catchy music, the various "gimmicks" and hidden secrets, and the charming sense of humor that NIS is known for. If you can make it past the old-fashioned checks and have the will to live up to its relentless challenge Prinny 2 is an operation worth engaging in. Just remember to throw your PSP out of frustration is a bad idea.
