Valhalla Rising is a kind of primeval action film, its tale of Vikings heading West predates Malick's The New World by six hundred years. Mikkelson plays "One Eye", a strong, silent type (he doesn't speak during the entire movie) who is being held captive by a hairy tribe of barbarians. They treat him as a cross between a champion gladiator and a trained bear letting him loose to take on all-comers whenever they meet a rival tribe.

These battles are extremely bloody and always end in the same way that is, until One Eye manages to kill his captors as well as defeat their rivals.

The landscape is stark, barren and forbidding. Sunshine is in short supply. The outlook doesn't much improve when One Eye falls in a band of early Christian soldiers, Scots whose expedition to the Holy Land takes them somewhere in the neighbourhood of Nova Scotia (not that they know it).

If The New World is one point of reference, Herzog's Aguirre, Wrath of God is closer to Refn's moral and aesthetic compass.The land they find is far from holy and its rigors bring out the worst in the voyagers, whose numbers deplete rapidly under the malign influence of hostile natives, starvation, and their own pathology. As things fall apart, the pagan One Eye stands by and watches.

Refn is always after a visceral response, and at its best, Valhalla Rising has an elemental, primitive power. But it's a near-miss of a movie and sometimes a miss can be as good as a mile. The film's austerity can't disguise the sketchiness of the conception, and the meager dialogue and glacial pace make it feel like an awfully long haul (though in reality it's only an hour and a half).
