When I talk about PSP games, there are 2010 standouts, PlayStation Mini Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess inevitably comes up. A cutesy platform game with a wicked sense of humor, developer Media Tonic tale of vampire Duke chasing his wife and the monsters who desperately want to stay away from him stole my heart. Now Media Tonic is back with Who's That Flying?! And while I had fun, I do not think it's on par with platformer-Dracula act I've seen before.

Time to save the world.

Who's That Flying?! casts you as a member of the Galactic Council Space Justice - nine super heroes, each charged with protecting a planet from any and all challengers.You are Earth, and you're on trial, after some black and purple monsters called Ravagers showed up on your watch. You play the levels as they are told in the trial. Each three-part mission has you fly in the light of a familiar town (complete with appropriate music for each) and blasting baddies with your arm cannon. The small Ravagers fly at you and if you persist, it is deducted from your acceptable loss of votes. If that number hits zero, it's game over.

Like the bad guys in other shmups coming Ravagers in via sweeping patterns, twirling conga lines, and so on. There are other enemies that will cover you in goo and hoses that fire out electricity, but these dudes are just to keep you busy so Ravagers can slide over. Keep the little guys in check, and you fill in a triple meter, which gives you turbo balls or laser blasts too little. Use this stuff wisely, and you'll make it to the end of each city the third level, where you'll find a boss battle, dwarfs everything else you've seen.

All this is fun and it's definitely a challenge trying to get a gold medal in these missions, but there were a few times where I was a bit bored. A few of the enemies that require you to keep one shoulder and then on something else, but mostly I was just hold X and fly around the screen. I would zone out for a bit, finding myself check the indicator at the top to see how much more level I had before me, or get weird when it looked as if I were running out of time during a boss fight and have to go back and play the whole level over. You chasing medals for you at the end of each story, and in-game trophies, but I felt like I could let a bunch Ravagers glide past flawlessly. The stakes were not high enough.

It's a lot of bad guys.

Fortunately, there is a counterbalance to it. Who's That Flying?! packs more than 25 challenges, which have a clear goal, such as completing a level without letting a Ravager gets by you. Correspondingly, Infinity Mode that task you with survivors as long as you can and then enter your initials on (unfortunately, the offline-only) rankings. Both of these were quite my speed, engaging, and what I want to do when I pop on the PSP in a few minutes. I'll be back to play them.
