Downsizing Your Home And Possessions
Going through a move can be a stressful experience
, especially when you are downsizing to a smaller place. When one is used to living in a bigger home with a lot more space to decorate and organize, trying to find places for your belongings in your new residence can be tough.
Very often, individuals find that they have to downsize their home size and living expenses because their rent or mortgage is too expensive. Larger places also mean more money and electricity used to heat and power the home, so a reduction in the amount that is due for utility bills can be another fabulous benefit of purchasing or renting a smaller residence.
However, this process can be trying, especially if you have gotten used to the luxury and openness of living in a larger place. A reduction is square footage is not always a bad thing; it can mean less space that you have to clean, a smaller area to cool and heat when air conditioning and heating is necessary, and a cozier more intimate interior.
If you do find that you will be noticing a reduction in square footage in your new home, there are many ways that you can prepare for the adjustment so that it does not have a large effect on your decorating, organization, and lifestyle. The first thing that you must do is organize your belongings and decide which items will be making the move with you.
Because you will have less space available to place things, it will probably be necessary to downsize your belongings as much and you can, as well. After living in one place for a long time, you often collect things and objects that are not necessary or useless and are taking up valuable room in your drawers, on bookshelves, and in closets.
Go through each room in your home and document all of the items that are there; from there, you will need to sort through everything that you own and decide what is valuable to you and what you can give or throw away. One of the greatest ways that you can really make a dent in reducing the number of items that you have to move is by sorting through old and used clothing.
Very often, people hang on to clothes that do not fit in hopes that they will again someday. Not only is this negative for your self image, but the clothes just end up taking extra room in your closet that could be used for something else.
A good rule of thumb is to sort through your clothing every six months and throw or give away anything that you have not worn during that span of time. Apparel gets stained, tattered, and worn after time, anyways, so it will be good to find these items and get rid of them.
Most donation centers and consignment stores will take things that are clean and in good condition, so it may be a good idea to browse around and research the policies for the stores that are near to you. When you are sorting through common areas like the kitchen, living room, and office, there may be many things that you need to throw away.
Doing so can prevent you from having to pack things that you no longer need. Once you have decided which items you wish to keep, place them into different categories regarding how you will use them.
If you know that you will immediately utilize decorations, clothing, and appliances, place them in boxes that will go straight to your new home. Things that you know you want to keep but may not have an immediate use for can go to a storage unit or be placed in cellars and attics.
When it comes to furnishing your new, smaller place, it may be necessary to sell old furniture and find more compact pieces. Otherwise, visit the place ahead of time to diagram how you might be able to make your older furniture fit.
Use larger areas as dual rooms, for instance turning a salon into a living and dining room or making your bedroom a place where you sleep and an office. Making these small changes can help you to feel comfortable and at home.
