Dozens dead in Nigerian Religious Crisis

The numbers of casualty and death toll have increased in the religious crisis between

the Muslim and Christians in Jos, Plateau state, Nigeria which had led to the death of dozens of people while others injured in fresh sectarian violence leading to the imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew. The crisis blowup at the Dutse Uku area of Jos North after an argument on the rebuilding of homes destroyed in the November 2008 clashes. The violence later spread to Nasarawa Gwom, Rikkos and Yanshanu areas of the city. Findings revealed that the rampaging youths armed with dangerous weapon still carried out attacked on people and going around destroying property in spite of the presence of the law enforcement agencies in the troubled Nasarawa and Dutse Uku areas of Jos North Local Government Area of the state, killings and burning of houses still continued in the early hour of Monday. As the youths who are armed in the area over powered the Police as the Assistant Commissioner of Police and five other policemen was attacked by the mob and sustained fatal injuries, the Police Force retreated. The military where later in control of the situation, ready to fire and for any kind of action as the Military men exaggerated patrol with armor tanks but the rampaging youths still took the advantage of inadequate security men on ground to unleash mayhem on innocent people, killing both children and women. The Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital corpse are been turned in by the Police and the Nigerian Red Cross while no fewer than 10 corpses are been found at the Central Mosque and 16 people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds while some were heavily cut with machete. A report made available stated that over 20 corpses lying at Anguwan Dula Local Government while on Bauchi road over twelve corpses were sighted along the major streets while some were burnt beyond recognition and several houses destroyed. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Greg Ayanting who confirmed that some of his men were injured added that the number of arrest has increased to sixty adding that they were caught with dangerous assorted weapons. In a Press briefing by the State Police Commissioner Greggory Anyanting, it was reported that the crisis was caused by some Muslims youths who without provocation attacked worshippers at the St. Michael Catholic Church in the Nasarawa Gwong area between 5:30 and 6:30 pm on Sunday. He said investigations were still on to establish the causes of the violence. According to the Police Commissioner 35 persons are arrested while five of them in military uniforms, carrying assorted weapons. I cannot give casualty figures now until my men complete their full investigation, he said. The crisis started at Dutse Uku when some youths tried to stop one Alhaji (names yet to be confirmed) from rebuilding his house that was burnt during the November 2008 crisis. The Alhaji was allegedly beaten by the youths. This drew the attention of some rival youths who came over, leading to a fight between Christian and Muslim youths, witnesses said. The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on Monday took a swipe on religious, political and community leaders over their alleged failure to bring a halt to the incessant crisis on the Plateau, saying they must brace up and inspire cultural renaissance by working hard to overcome differences that divided the people which should be based on core values of humanity. Following yet another report of violent clashes in the precinct of Nasarawa Gwom of Jos town in Plateau state, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) wishes to say enough of senseless violence leading top loss of lives. ACF stated that violence, be it political, religious or ethnic differences is not acceptable to God or Allah as well as the peace loving people of Nigeria and to the atmosphere needed for socio-economic development. Surely, no society can thrive on the basis of its factions but by tolerant accommodation of one another.
