Dragons are all the rage these days. From the Eragon book series to the recent release of Dragon Age: Origins, from the renewed popularity of the Dungeons & Dragons brand to the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon 3D movie, there are countless outlets for fans of the fantastic creatures to get their fire-breathing fix. Dragonology, now, offers one more.

Dragonology on Nintendo's DS is a new video game adaptation of a book first published back in 2003. That book, fully titled "Dragonology: The Complete Book of Dragons," purported to be an actual scientific resource containing the research notes of one Dr. Ernest Drake, who filled the document with the results of his lengthy studies of real dragons in the wild. In this game version, though, those studies aren't yet complete -- and you take on the role of a young apprentice dragonologist, accompanying Dr. Drake on his expeditions to find and learn about dragons in their natural habitats. It's an interesting idea, managing to feel unique and individual even among the growing crowd of other dragon-focused media products out there.

The few bumps Dragonology hits along the way are probably in the dragon-caging mini-game (pictured above), which is largely based on the random chance of the touch screen's spinning wheel landing on the right digit before time runs out; and the dragon-flying mini, as the control in that one seems a bit too picky. There are also a couple of other occasions when some control confusion could keep aspiring dragonologists from having all the fun they could too, as the game has a habit of never settling on one control scheme -- some activities require the stylus, some the face buttons, and some a combination of both. It would have been nicer for the developers to pick a single input style and stick with it, all the way through.

Most of Dragonology's issues are minor, though, and shouldn't keep young, dragon-crazed DS players from having fun tracking down the "real" dragons of the world alongside Dr. Drake here. Older gamers won't be nearly as entertained, as this one's clearly targeted to the younger set -- but if you've got a son, daughter, niece, nephew or cousin in the Eragon and How To Train Your Dragon age range, Dragonology on DS could be another nice addition to their own growing museums of dragonalia.
