For those uninitiated, all you really have to do to understand the concept of this sport is to watch any of the Fast and Furious movies. Although, only the last one really does true justice to what it's all about. It involves, usually, the use of high performance motorcars as these give the ultimate result and a driver who will purposely over steer the vehicle at gripping speeds. What they wish to achieve by doing this is a gliding sensation as the tyre loses traction with the ground. Scientifically, it occurs when the driver has manipulated the rear slip angle to be wider than the front slip angle coming through a corner apex and the way in which the car is rotating is opposite to the direction of the wheels.

While most youngsters new to driving will have a go at doing this on the open road or wherever they may haunt, there are in actual fact legal venues and competitions that encourage this rush. Some places, with respect to the former, will actually teach the driver the tricks of the trade (so to speak) while incorporating safety into the fun; a benefit to the driver and society as a whole, as it aims to make our roads a lot safer.

People may be interested to know what exactly competitive drifting involves. Historically it is not surprising that it was the Japanese, who love heart-stopping and somewhat crazy challenges that push them to the edge, which first instigated this concept as a sport.

Since it started in the 1970s it has only gone from strength to strength as its popularity moved throughout the world.

Drifting competitions are ideal for those who not only love to partake in the sport but also those who love to watch speed, those who appreciate a good engine and well maintained cars, and the smell of all that is cars, especially the smoke from burning rubber. In actual fact, this is one of the features that judges look for: the amount that is generated. Other components that set apart excellent drifters from their not-so-elite counterparts are how spectacular they are to watch, precision with respect to remaining on a set path, how fast they travel (in general, as well as through a turn) and just how much class they have.

Of course, to be able to compete with the best you have to have what it takes - and also the right equipment. There are common cars associated with this sport, which have all been manufactured with all that is needed. Perhaps the main factors that a driver needs to have however are natural ability, nerves of steel and a love of a natural high.
