Driving A Semi-truck On Slick Roads

I'm sure we've all seen at least one episode of ice truck drivers on television

. Perhaps you've imagined yourself being behind the wheel of such an enormous vehicle! However, driving such a vehicle in perfect weather, on perfect roads, may be a difficult task in itself. The manoeuvrability of such vehicles do not compare to much smaller vehicles - such as cars. In poor conditions, one must take some extra precautions in order to avoid an accident of any kind. The idea of a steady application of the brake pedal becomes somewhat obsolete in snowy weather, and so you must take some extra steps.

First and foremost, it is certainly advisable to take along a first aid kit. If you were to encounter any problems, then you would have the necessary aid in order to prevent bleeding for a limited amount of time - hopefully adequate time for the medical staff to arrive on the scene. It is also common-sense to carry a mobile phone with you, so that you're able to actually phone the medical staff if an incident does occur. Being stranded in the middle of nowhere, without any means of communication is an irresponsible act, even for those not driving such potentially destructive vehicles.

Aside from ensuring the necessary equipment for any eventuality, one must also check the vehicle you are driving is in a good state of repair. This, however, tends to be the first thing one should do for any vehicle, and should be second nature for most people. With semi-truck drivers, balancing your cargo would be a good idea, as this ensures that the weight of the vehicle is balanced. In particularly severe weather conditions, even more steps should be taken, such as decreasing the air pressure in the tyres, and adding chains for the snowy conditions to maintain adequate traction.

It is often said too much for good reason, but one must be always vigilant on the road, and even more so in unpredictable weather conditions. Unless you live in places like Russia or Canada, which have lots of snowy weather most of the year, then you probably will not be used to driving in such conditions. As a result, abstain from any distractions, like cell phones and distracting music. Whilst driving, you must be constantly assessing the road ahead of you.

When driving behind other vehicles, you should increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front by at least 10 seconds. This will provide you with the necessary time to stop, if the traffic ahead of you stops suddenly and unexpectedly. Whilst many vehicles these days are fitted with ABS, there is still an imminent danger in the aforementioned conditions that the wheels may lock. Braking gently, by using the ball of your foot, will be the most efficient type of braking. You can also use Jake brakes, and exhaust brakes - where legal, to increase the efficiency of the braking process.

By employing some of these techniques, you can decrease the chances of causing any serious injuries if something does arise. The most wise advice that one can give for such conditions, is that you must always be vigilant on the road ahead of you, whilst simultaneously assessing the situation around you
