Driving Safely In Snow Storms
When you know that you are going to have to drive in the snow you want to make sure that you are prepared
. There are a lot of people that suffer severe consequences because they drive in the snow without the proper preparations.
First, you want to make sure that you shop for the right type of car. If you know that you are going to be living in an area that has a lot of winter storms, you want to make sure that you are buying a car that will be good in the winter.
There are some cars that are just not good for winter driving. They may get stuck often because they are too low or the way that they drive may end up making it hard for you to keep control of the car on the snow and the ice.
Cars that have front wheel drive are much better in the snow than cars that have rear will drive. When you are in the snow, rear wheel drive will send you skidding all over the road because it will be so hard to control.
If you can find a car that is four wheel drive, this will be your best option. Many people do just fine with cars that are only two wheel drive, you just have to make sure that you know how you are going to work with your car to conquer the snow.
Second, you should look for a car with an automatic transmission rather than a manual transmission. There are not many people that can successfully go a slow enough speed in the manual transmission cars to get out of sticky situations.
This can be a very frustrating set of criteria for people that are looking to purchase a little sports car. You want to make sure that you understand what your priorities are when you are shopping so you can be happy with your car year round.
To add to this problem, the lighter the car is the harder it will be to drive in the snow. You want to make sure that you have taken the time to find a car that will have enough weight behind it to get out of problematic spots.
Third, you want to make sure that you have the necessary supplies in your car if you are to get stuck. This means you should have a shovel, flashlight, ice scraper and a bag of road salt in your car at all times.
These supplies will help you to stay alive when your car gets stuck on the road. You should also make sure that you have jumper cables and a portable batter jump starter to make sure that your car is able to stay on throughout the time you are stuck.
Fourth, you always want to plan to have some extra time to travel. When you are driving in the snow it is necessary that you allow yourself plenty of time to drive slowly enough that you can stop if you lose control.
Many people find themselves in problematic situations because they have not been driving slowly enough. The more time that you have the easier it will be to drive safely and steadily to your destination.
Fifth, when it is snowing outside or there is snow on the ground you want to make sure that you slow down. Slowing down is key to being able to stay safe when the conditions outside are less than pleasant.
This also includes the fact that you should at least double the stopping distance that you give yourself. Slamming on your brakes can be very problematic and often times will make you crash right into the person in front of you.
You will also notice that your windshield will get iced up when you are driving long distances. Take the time to stop and take off the ice from your windshield so that you are able to see the other cars as you are driving.
This also means that you should be taking the time to have any problems with your windshield fixed before the winter season rolls around. You do not want to be dealing with cracks or chips in your windshield while you are driving.
There are a lot of people that do not understand how important this is and their windshield cracks even more after winter starts. Make sure that you avoid this problem by having your windshield fixed as soon as a crack or a chip appear on the window.
