Driving Test Tips
If you have got to this point then your instructor will be confident you have what it takes to pass the driving test
. It will feel to you like there is a lot to remember and you will be very aware just one serious error will mean a test failure, which will get your nerves jangling. At this point you need to remember your recent lessons and how well you have been driving, and have confidence in yourself not to do anything daft.
In the driving test the examiners are not looking for anything amazing, your real learning comes after the test. They are making sure you are safe to be on the road to be able to carry out that further learning, and wont be putting any of the general public in harms way. Dont rush. With the nerves youre feeling, rushing and going too fast faster than you normally would is easy to succumb to. This can be the biggest error to make as the faster you go, the faster your reactions need to be if something was to happen in front of you, and this will put you under more stress. The examiners are looking for a safe drive. Be sure to keep to the speed limits, or what you perceive to be appropriate for that road. Speeding is a definite no. Going too slow though can be just as bad as depending on the road it can mean you becoming an obstruction. If youre going so slowly everyone is over taking you and potentially taking risks to do so, then you have become that obstruction. You need to show you can keep up with traffic in front of you (within the speed limits).
You also need to pay attention to, and remember all your mirror checks and observations. Safety should be at the forefront of your mind. Never even consider pulling out without being sure there is nothing around you. If you are unsure, then wait. You just know if you were to take the chance in your test, sods law says something will be coming and that will be your test over. Remember to have a good look around the whole car before moving off and indicate if necessary. If ever in doubt if to indicate or not, then indicate anyway. Unless its a confusing signal then you wont get marked down for indicating when you didnt really need to.
A common mistake on the test is to proceed when it isnt safe to do so because you feel youve been waiting for too long. Let take for example a roundabout. Especially if it is in rush hour you could be waiting at a roundabout for a while. Its fairly common at this point to panic and try to take a gap that isnt really there, because you are aware youre taking a while to go. Never rush, and only move off when you are confident you have a good gap. The examiner wont mind you being at a roundabout, or any junction, for a long time as long as you havent been able to go. Have faith in your ability and know that if you dont feel youve had a chance to go, then you are probably right and the examiner will be thinking the same as you wait for a chance youre happy with.
Its easier said than done but try not to worry or panic. Have faith in yourself, remember your mirror checks and observations and the rest will start to take care of itself.
