Some drugs can cause either balance problems or hearing problems in one in four cases, especially antibiotics. A recent Chinese study found that 123 children out of 154 had lost their hearing as a result of antibiotics and 60 of these children had hearing problems directly related to the antibiotic gentamicin.These side-effects do not just happen overseas, gentamicin is toxic to the sensory cells in the ear though there are many varieties and degrees of hearing and balance problems. It can permanently destroy a perception of equilibrium in cases where the drug is being taken for a long period of time or in high dosages; yet there are many cases where this level of damage has been recorded within 3 to 5 days of taking the drug.In a lot of cases the damage to the ear as a result of drugs will not show up immediately it may be months after you stop taking the drug. By which time it is too late to do anything about the damage. It may be that the damage is cumulative and may result from more than one drug. If you take medicines regularly it will be worth your while asking your doctor to look the side-effects up in their drug bible.It still may be worth your while to stop taking these drugs, but it is your choice and you can only make an informed choice if you are aware of the risks. Whatever happens the personal effects will only affect you and no one else. There are cases when the situation is very clear-cut for instance if you would die without medication then deafness is a smaller price to pay. Unfortunately, in many cases this is not the case and you have the right to make an informed decision. Not everyone metabolises drugs at the same rate or even as expected some people are told that there is a risk to hearing if the drug is taken as a high dose over a long period time, but that is not always the case. If your kidneys are not functioning at optimum levels then they may not flush out the drug and the levels may become dangerous within your body in a very short period of time. Many drugs that are ototoxic are given routinely to elderly people these include antibacterial drugs such as aminoglycosides, antihistamines in the H1-blockers category, ace inhibitors, beta-blockers and certain diuretics, tricyclic antidepressant and many more. In fact there are so many at present the number is nearly 700 drugs, therefore it is worth asking your doctor about ototoxic effects, because the consequences can be very long lasting indeed.
