Drum Arranging Masterpieces For Rock And Pop Music

I believe that creating the drum parts for rock and pop songs is just as important as creating anything else

. Over the last 20 years a TON of drum arranging has been created by keyboard players and producers on drum machines and I have done my share of that. Creating drum parts on a drum machine or sampler can be beautifully done or robotic. For personal taste, I love the when a real drummer is either combined with a drum machine or a real drummer plays by him or herself with all the magic of feel and nuance that only real drums provide. Certainly hip-hop, rap and certain techno styles of music just sound better with drum machines and loops. But the point of this blog is to highlight the rock and pop masterpiece drum arranging that I think helped mold the landscape of rock and pop music over the last 40 years. My acknowledgements for this blog are John Bonhams, Neil Pearts Steve Gadds, Carter Beaufords and Jeff Porcaros drum arranging. John Bonhams feel and contribution to Led Zepplins music is obviously HUGE. When you look at even simple songs like Whole Lotta Love, Rock And Roll, and Black Dog, to me you have masterpiece rock and roll drum arranging at work. The beats he played, the awareness of the sections, the timing and nuance, and the way he created energy for the other musicians without rushing is a beautiful to behold. If you lined up a ten drummers and taught them those exact beat rhythms and recorded all of them, I am not sure you would get anything as awesome as John Bonham playing those parts. A clear example of how we CAN put our own unique personality and individuality into playing drum beats and arranging drum parts. Neil Pearts lyrics and drum arranging obviously were an INTREGAL factor in the success of RUSH. When you look at iconic songs like Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and YYZ its the drum arranging and drum parts that he played that are what I consider to be rock drum masterpieces. I cant even imagine those songs being performed by someone else without a least a nod to the original parts. Steve Gadd clearly changed the vocabulary of drum set players all over the world with his trademark drum fills. Songs like Aja (Steely Dan), 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover (Paul Simon), and Late In The Evening (Paul Simon) showcased his astounding drum arranging talent that mixed drum corps style snare playing, latin, rock and pop styles on the drum set. To say he is created drum set arranging masterpieces is an understatement. I know I have gone to see the Dave Mathews Band perform live many times JUST to take in Carter Beaufords drum arranging and beautiful playing and I suspect that I am not alone. Would the Dave Mathews Band ever has been as big as they are without Carters drum arranging contribution? Well never know but clearly his musical input was huge. Songs like Crash, Ants Marching and Two Step are drum set arranging masterpieces in my humble opnion. And like the other drummers in this blog, these songs are just a tiny example of his library of drum arranging work. Carters drumming flair mixed his ability to play rhythms that make the music sound good are off the charts. Jeff Porcaros drum part arranging on Africa, Rosanna and Hold The Line are similarly pop music drum arranging masterpieces. What would these Toto songs be without Jeffs drum arranging contributions? Being a studio drummer for all those years and playing on Boz Scaggs tracks and hundreds of others must have given Jeff a keen awareness of how important the drum parts were that he played. I think if you asked any of these drummers in person, they would most probably say that clearly there are many drummers out there who play faster or more complex than they do. And maybe they dont even consciously know how important their drum arranging was to music of the last 40 years. But the whole point of my blog today is that playing fast is a good thing but the real goal is to create drum arranging that enhances the music gorgeously. THATS what these drummers did beautifully and their efforts live on for generations to come. If we spend more time think about drum arranging it will CERTAINLY help our drumming in everyway and focus us on being better musicians.
