Dry Eyes After Laser Surgery Is Not Necessarily Permanent

When you talk to people who have had laser eye surgery, one of the problems that many talk about is having dry eyes. In fact, it is the most frequent problem cited by those who have undergone the procedure.

How many patients are we talking about? It's hard to come up with an accurate number for a number of reasons. One is that there is not central database tracking such complaints. Another, is that in many cases, the patient was prone to having dry eyes prior to the surgery. And, in these cases, he probably should not have been approved to undergo the procedure.

The good thing is that laser eye surgery is not the only option available for those who have pre-existing dry eye syndrome or other dry eye problems. And that is to consider an operation like Epi-Lasik or Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) instead. These are both methods which are less invasive to the eye and, therefore, have less chance of causing dry eye or other vision problems.

But you shouldn't automatically assume that the laser eye surgery has resulted in you having permanent dry eyes. To be prudent, it is best to wait until at least a month or two after the surgery. This is because, nearly all patients will experience some level of dry eye directly following the procedure.

Fortunately, the majority of times, the condition is not permanent. The situation will correct itself in a half year, at the most. If it does not, then you may have a more long term problem. During this period, you can help to ease the problem with normal, over the counter eye drops. If, however, the condition persists, your doctor may have to come up with another option. Fortunately, treatment of dry eye, unlike laser eye surgery itself, is covered by most health insurance policies.

If you really want to minimize the odds of you having any post operational problems, there is one thing that you can do. And that is to choose your doctor with care. The thousands of advertising for corrective eye surgery has convinced many people that this procedure is no more dangerous than a walk in the park.

The truth, however, is much more complicated. And, as many patients can attest, complications can occur in eve the most minor of surgical procedures. But, since you only have one set of eyes, you want to be especially careful in the doctor you choose. With that in mind, rather than choosing the doctor or clinic by how much money you save on their special advertising sale price, choose him by how many successful patients he has operated on.

For many, dry eye is n bothersome annoyance. Fortunately, however, this condition poses no danger to your eyesight. And, if this is the least of your problems following surgery, you may decide that it is worth having after all.
