Dry, Sore Eyes? How A Simple Yoga Exercise Could Help.

Eyes are so vital to your life and wellbeing, that it's easy to forget just how much you use them

. Imagine the amount of work they do, taking in an endless stream of information and sending it to your brain, second after second, every day. And for many, using a screen at work and then another at home is one of the prime ways of sending information to the eyes. Not so many years ago, electronic screens did not exist in the daily lives of most of the working population of the globe. Now it's likely that you'll be squinting at your phone when you're between bigger screens.

But that also creates a problem. When you look at a screen you don't blink as often as nature intended you to. And of course, the natural action that cleans and moisturises the eyes is reduced.

James Sheehy, Professor of Optometry at Ohio State University, led a study into a condition called "dry eye". One of the facts the study reports is that 'blink rate' can fall from 15 to 7.5 blinks per minute. That suggest that eyes are only blinking (when looking at screens) half as much as they need to. It's not surprising that eyes can feel dry and tired over the course of a day.

A Simple Exercise: I'd like to share a little Yoga exercise for you to use when you feel your eyes getting sore.

First of all, rub the palms of your hands together pretty rapidly for 10 -15 seconds. By now, you'll feel a build up of heat in the palms of your hands. Now (if it's safe to do so) close your eyes, removing spectacles. If you wear contact lenses, it's a really good idea to remove them for a while too. So, continue to rub your palms together while bringing your hands towards your eyes. Separate your hands, and cup one hand over each eye. (Your fingers will be resting on your forehead). Make sure your palms are close enough to your head to keep light out but make sure you are not putting any pressure directly onto your eye balls. Next, slowly open your eyes - gaze into the restful dark, blink as you need to - and just feel the warmth soaking in to your eyes. When you're ready to move your hands away, do so little by little so that your eyes can adjust slowly to the change in light levels.

Are you getting all the light you need? Do you ever consider that just as sunlight is important to our health, so star light and the night sky are too? The 'driving' masculine and linear part of us is animated by the daytime, whereas the 'receptive' feminine and non-linear aspects are nourished by the dark, by moon and star light.

If you can find even 20 minutes two or three times a day to get outside, whatever the weather, and avail yourself of some natural light, you'll feel the benefits. And it's a real bonus to walk in the moonlight or starlight. Naturally, you'll want to make sure you do so safely: stroll with a buddy or even step outside into your yard at night and just allow your eyes to rest on the night sky. It's beautiful too and that will feed your soul as well as your eyes.

Remember, if eye discomfort persists, make sure you see a qualified optometrist or your doctor. Eyesight is too precious a gift to ignore.
