Dwarfism – A condition, not an Illness

Dwarfism A condition, not an Illness

Dwarfism A condition, not an Illness

There has always been a great deal of debate and discussion regarding coming up with a proper term to be used for children who suffer from dwarfism. Most people who are going through it are fine with idea of being called "person of a short stature". On the other hand, there are some people who do not mind being referred to as "dwarfs".

Dwarfism is a condition which basically involves being of a short height, which comes to a halt and does not increase with age. There are various causes that lead to this condition, some of which include a genetic mutation taking place, inheritance, hormonal or metabolic disorders, and chromosomal and pituitary gland's abnormalities.

There are also different forms of dwarfism, out of which achondroplasia seems to be the most commonly occurring type. This occurs when both parents of a child belong to an average height. In fact, the factor of both parents being of an average height is what contributes to this type of dwarfism 85% of the time.

While such a child is growing, a few other problems may start occurring, including being more vulnerable to ear infections, having breathing problems, severe back pain and stunted motor skills development.

It is typical for many people to be judgmental about a child who has dwarfism. Mostly people tend to consider them as being different to such an extent, that they are incapable of carrying out some of the usual activities in life. Moreover, their intellectual ability is also underestimated.

This is one area where most people are inclined towards being critical. However this is not the case as such people have absolutely normal mental functioning and intellectual abilities like another person of their age. It would be wrong to consider dwarfism as a disease, which requires treatment to be controlled. Some people go through this condition, which does not make their abilities any different from that of the rest. They do not need treatment and can stay healthy and live long lives.

It is always recommended to treat these people like the rest, so that they do not feel as if they are incompetent. Most of the people facing this condition get married; have children and prosperous careers, like other people of normal heights.
