Dynamics Gp Update From Old Version Of Great Plains

Formerly this product was known as Great Plains Software Dynamics

. GPS Dynamics was introduced in earlier 1990th as one of the first accounting packages with graphical user interface available on Mac and Microsoft Windows. In our experience successful one was 3.2 around year 1995 and all the successors: 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0, 7.5 and all the way to 2010. Plus we should mention that before graphical Dynamics there was so called Great Plains Accounting for DOS and Windows (archaic Windows interface). Popular versions were 9.5, 9.2 and earlier. All applications mentioned above could be upgraded all the way to release 2010 also often referred as 11.0. Due to such long time of presence on the software market you may expect reasonably high number of customers who has to run old version and at some point decide to update to Dynamics GP 2010 which is current as we are writing this paper in March of 2012. Lets try to give some fresh air and discuss update process, what is happening behind the scenes and update paths:

1.Dynamics GP Utilities. Update is done through GP Utilities application and it has server and client sides. Server process updates tables which got changes in the new release. Simple enough as table contents is copied into temporary table and then original table is dropped and recreated and gets is rows back from temporary one. There is system database with the name Dynamics and one or more company databases. Client process simply copies user workstation on your client computer and updates registry. Of course there are nuances as you may have modified reports in Reports.dic dictionary and Forms in Forms.dic. They are also taken cared by Utility application

2.Lets now talk about database platforms. All the releases up to 7.5 were available on Microsoft SQL Server, Pervasive SQL 2000/Btrieve and Ctree/Faircom. Great Plains DOS was hosted in Btrieve. Mac versions as we believe the last one was 4.0 were Ctree/Faircom in case of deployment on Macintosh server or Btrieve if server is Microsoft Windows. Microsoft acquired GP Software in late 1990th and in several years phased out Ctree and Pervasive SQL compatible options and the last one available on all three platforms was 7.5. If you are on non-Microsoft SQL server one then you probably expect DB migration utility as additional step in update project

3.Multistep process. Usually one step update is possible if you are one or two versions behind the targeted one. Otherwise you should expect several steps. If more than one steps are required then good idea is to ship data to your GP consulting company servers and have them do the job

4.Lets now share popular questions. Are update projects always successful? Well, the answer is it depends on your data cleanliness. Sometimes consultant discovers that there are broken transactions and they are not fixed by such tools as Check Links. There is the tendency however that recent versions are more stable comparing to the ones released in late 1990th and earlier 2000th. If we are on Great Plains DOS then do we need to do data conversion? No as all the data is transferred to GP by migration utility. Can we keep old server hardware? It depends on the compatibility with modern MS SQL Server version and other technologies. If your server is at least five years old then it is probably good idea to invest into the new hardware
