Dyslexia- Causes And Symptoms
You must have seen that some children have a difficulty in identifying some words and they often make mistakes in writing them too
. If they write it then they write its mirror image that is inverted form of the actual letter or word. Some may have problem in grasping thing when taught in a fast pace. This is not because he or she is trying to be naughty; this is because they may have dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a disorder in children who, despite conventional classroom experience, fail to attain the language skills of reading, writing, and spelling commensurate with their intellectual abilities. It is most common learning disability in children which persists throughout the life hindering their ability to read, write, spell, and sometimes speak.
National institute of neurological disorders and strokes defined dyslexia as, a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with spelling, phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds), and/or rapid visual-verbal responding. In adults, dyslexia usually occurs after a brain injury or in the context of dementia. It can also be inherited in some families and so on, and recent studies have identified a number of genes that may predispose an individual to developing dyslexia.
Person affected by dyslexia often have average or above average IQ as they are not mentally affected by dyslexia. It is just a reading and writing disorder that nobody actually knows why it occurs. Doctors also believe that dyslexia often runs in the family and these inherited traits appear to affect parts of the brain concerned with language.
You can identify if your child is having dyslexia or not by looking for the following signs and symptoms:
Late talking
Learning new words slowly
Difficulty rhyming
Reading at a level well below the expected level for the age of your child
Problems processing and understanding what he or she hears
Difficulty comprehending rapid instructions
Trouble following more than one command at a time
Problems remembering the sequence of things
Difficulty seeing (and occasionally hearing) similarities and differences in letters and words
An inability to sound out the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word
Seeing letters or words in reverse (for example "b" for "d", "saw" for "was," or won for now) this is common in young children, but may be more pronounced in children with dyslexia
Difficulty spelling
Trouble learning a foreign language
It can also be characterized by a delay in the age at which a child begins to read. You must consult a pediatrician, dyslexia specialist or dyslexia doctor if you feel or identify any of the above given symptoms in your child.
If dyslexia goes undiagnosed at younger age then it can also continue later in life and can affect overall performance of your child throughout the life causing difficulty in reading and writing.
