A couple of years ago, the World Series of Poker revised their format a bit for the "Main Event." Where previously the players played continuously until a champion was left standing alone, they decided to insert a break from the rest of the tournament once they had a final table. Now the World Series of Poker plays down to the final table in July but then breaks until the final table play in November.

ESPN has the broadcast rights for the World Series of Poker and has been showing weekly broadcasts of the tournament leading up to the final table. Watching the shows, with "expert" analysis from Norm Chad, is part of the Poker myth that makes all the online players think they can win this thing.

They see the amateurs and the online poker room players going up against the professional players and winning. The professionals wear their sponsor gear from Poker Stars, Ultimate Bet, Full Tilt and all the other online sites while they wonder what the amateurs are doing. The edited broadcasts move from table to table and make it seem as if the action runs hot and heavy.

Yet anyone who has played poker at live poker rooms or in online poker room tournaments either one knows that the action as shown on television is never happening that fast in real life. In most tournament settings and poker rooms, there may be long periods where the cards don't fall so the player keeps folding, even when in the large or small blinds (forced bets). If another player raises the large blind and the player in the large blind doesn't have any worthy hands, then that money (or chips) is lost.

So ESPN is doing what any good television network would do they are using the editing process to make things appear to be more exciting than it really is. One week, they show the play as the World Series counts down play to the "bubble" (the point at which everyone left in the tournament "cashes." It's likely that the only tournament exit worse than being the first player out of a tournament is to be the last player out before the cash pay outs start. When the play is getting close to the bubble, all the small stack players start slow playing and doing whatever they can do to make the cash field.
