Language development explodes during a child's 3rd and 4th years

. Children learn an average of 50 new words per month! Providing opportunities for children to talk and taking the time to listen to what they have to say are the most important ways to allow young linguists to develop their language skills. Language helps children construct meaning, express thoughts and emotions and enhance their friendships.

What's at stake in early exposure to a rich language environment is clearly more than just a big vocabulary or articulateness or speed reading; it is the structuring of the brain's entire cognitive mechanism and the levels at which the child, and later adult, will interact with and understand the world. Brain development in early years' depends on access to books (to read and listen to), to ballads, poems, and all manner of spoken and written word.

Singing supports this basic and beautiful form of human expression. The 3 - or 4 - year-olds ability to be expressive in language extends to exploration of this many voices, singing songs in a limited range and emerging pitch accuracy. In keeping with the integrated nature of learning for this age child, the benefits of singing extend beyond the ability to match pitches. Singing helps with memory and recall, with physical development, creativity and socialization. Some early childhood activities provide opportunities for children to explore their many voices and to use a "singing voice".

Some research suggests five different types of voices that young children use. In any group of preschool children, you may find all of these 'voices' : Pre-singer, Speaking Range Singer, Limited Range Singer, Initial Range Singer, and Singer. All children do have many voices. Through your encouragement, children can continue to use all their voice, you can give them a beautiful gift that will last a lifetime!
