Easy Guide To Barefooting

Barefoot waterskiing is one of the greatest thrills you can experience

. Luckily, learning how to barefoot ski is just like learning how to do anything else. It requires patience and practice--and a boat, some friends to drive and spot you, a wetsuit, a lifejacket, a tow rope, a wakeboard or kneeboard, and a calm body of water with good weather. You will want to begin by using a boom, the metal pole that sticks out from the side of the boat. Starting directly with a long line can be quite painful for novice barefooters, resulting in few successes.

Before you get started, calculate your barefooting speed. The equation is your weight divided by 10 plus 20. If you weigh 140 pounds, it's 14 plus 20 which makes 34 miles per hour. Now get your gear on. In addition to a padded wetsuit, you might want to wear a cup or neck brace and gloves. When you're ready to get into the water, use the boom to support yourself and walk out away from the boat. Grab your wakeboard (or kneeboard) when you are a foot away from the boom's end. With your feet in front of you, sit on the board and lean back so the front tip is out of the water. Bend your legs slightly and put your toes on the front tip. Hold onto the boom with straight arms.

Hang on tight as the boat accelerates. You'll eat a lot of spray but try to focus on keeping the board from bouncing too much by slowly easing toward the front. This will be necessary when you reach about 11 miles per hour. At this point, the board will start riding above the water. When you reach 15 miles per hour--have your spotter signal you so you know--gently bend your knees and put your feet on the water. Don't stand yet. Once your feet are on the water's surface, the driver can accelerate to your barefooting speed, in this case, 34 mph.

Here comes the moment of truth. Spread your feet and clamp your knees together. Pull up your toes and angle them in so they direct spray away from you. Very, very slowly put more weight on your feet and move into the barefoot position. Don't go quickly or straighten your legs. The water will be very unforgiving on your face if you fall forward. Your feet will begin to plane and your rear end will start to rise out of the water as the wakeboard slips away. The goal is to get your knees at a 90 degree angle so your upper legs are parallel to the water (like sitting in a chair). Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, your arms in front of you, and your head up with your eyes looking straight ahead.

After a few attempts, you'll get the hang of it and will be able to hold the position. From there, it's only more practice and patience as you learn new tricks that really add to the excitement of barefooting.
