Easy Steps To Guard Against Pest Infestation In Your Home
One of the biggest investments you'll ever make is your home so it only makes sense to keep it in the best shape possible
. Your home represents you in many ways and the better you take care of your home the higher its resale value should you decide to sell it at some point in the future.
One thing which can seriously damage your home is an infestation of termites, which can destroy your home if left unchecked. Other pest infestations are unhygienic or simply irritating, such as rats, mice, roaches or ants.
The following are a few tips that'll help prevent a pest infestation in your home:
1. While no person is expecting to eat off your floor other non-human visitors will be delighted to dine off them. So good housekeeping: take out your trash in a timely manner and clean your floors, windowsills and entryways on a regular basis. Keep your dirty laundry in hampers and generally ensure that your home is tidy - and look regularly for signs of rats, mice and roaches.
2. Inspect your home for cracks or other holes which could allow your home to be invaded by pests. If your home has a crawlspace, make absolutely certain that there are no holes which can allow skunks, possums or other animals to enter your home. Be sure to check closet floors, which are all too easy to forget about. Check your windows to make sure they seal tightly and inspect your foundation and basement for the signs of an infestation of ants or termites which can damage your home.
3. Check the seals on your doors; a poor seal can easily let mice into your home. Even an opening of a quarter inch is more than large enough for a mouse to squeeze through. One sign of a poor seal is the presence of beetles and other insects near your doors. Ants are a common pest during the summer and tend to be present in kitchens and bathrooms searching for water. These are usually easily dealt with using traps but don't assume they'll go away without your attention.
4. Inspect your roof for damaged shingles or holes; these can let squirrels, bats, birds and other animals into your attic. Squirrels in particular can be problematic, since they can cause damage as well as drive you to distraction with the sound of their running and scratching. Also inspect the attic for entryways where you can see daylight and seek professional advice for appropriate interior guards.
5. Keep water and excess moisture from collecting in your home; like any other animal, insects need water and will thrive if you allow them a supply. If you have leaky pipes or a leaky air conditioner, this can attract pests.
A pest infestation which is not addressed can become a serious problem very quickly. If an infestation causes damage to your home, it can be very costly to take care of the infestation. Eradication can be expensive and intrusive and the chemicals used can be harmful to you and your family as well as any pets you may have in the home.
Quality pest control services help you to keep a step ahead of pests with preventative maintenance services at reasonable prices. Most companies will offer a spring and fall preventative maintenance cycle, spraying the outside of your home's foundation to prevent pests from entering.
With a combination of a regular pest control service and the tips listed above, you can help protect yourself from having your home overrun by pests - and the enormous expense of repairing your home afterwards.
