If you are breast feeding your baby then you're already using up five hundred calories each day, which is a pretty good start.


Try eating little and often so that you don't suffer hunger pangs and get tempted by biscuits or cakes. If you do get hungry, have a low fat yoghurt or some raw carrot or celery. Keep a bag of cherry tomatoes in the fridge to snack on or have a piece of fruit.

If you find eating fruit with stones, like nectarines, peaches and plums a bit messy and really too much bother, then try preparing a few first thing in the morning. Take out the stones, cut the fruit into bite sized chunks and store them in the fridge in an airtight box. Only do enough for one day though as it won't keep very well for longer.

Eat a balanced low fat diet with some protein, preferably chicken or fish, pulses, lots of vegetables and some carbohydrate in the form of brown bread, pasta, rice or potatoes.

If you're not into workouts or sport, make sure that you go for a walk every day. Even twenty minutes will make all the difference, both as exercise and for the benefits of getting out of the house into the fresh air. It will be good for your baby too.

If there's a park near you, then you'll probably meet other mothers and you'll maybe get to discussing weight loss after having a baby. You can exchange tips and maybe have a bit of a competition between you to see who can reach their ideal weight first, which will be a great motivator.
